Setting up a functional, safe and flexible eCommerce website is now far easier than it was ten or twelve years ago. In the early 2000’s, about the only way to enable eCommerce was to hire expensive computer programmers who would build your site according to how you needed it to operate.

This closed the door for many small businesses – and indeed anyone aiming to start selling online. A proper website could cost anything up to £50,000 for small to medium-sized businesses.

In around 2001, 2002, people started to develop software which could be used and modified by anyone (but not re-packaged and sold) under the principles and protocols of OpenSource. Today, there is a massive array of excellent (and trashy) software available under the OpenSource protocol, and eCommerce software is no exception.
